Victims claim adverse side effects connected to the use of Xarelto led to injuries and death.
A new drug designed to reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes is allegedly connected to deadly side effects including uncontrollable hemorrhaging. The drug, Xarelto, is manufactured by Bayer and marketed through a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
More on Xarelto
The drug is intended to provide an alternative to other medications that require a high level of monitoring, such as Coumadin also known as Warfarin, widely prescribed anticoagulants. Patients who are prescribed Warfarin are generally required to take frequent prothrombin time tests, tests that measure how long it takes for the patient's blood to clot. Like most blood thinning medications, there is a risk of adverse side effects. These tests are designed to reduce the risk of complications connected to potentially adverse side effects.
One of the supposed "perks" of Xarelto is that it is more patient friendly and does not require this frequent testing. However, the issue with Xarelto is twofold: the warnings do not adequately encompass the full dangers associated with this medication and there is not currently a reversal agent. As a result, adverse effects connected to Xarelto can be particularly fatal.
A number of cases involving victims claiming to be injured by this medication are already entering court systems throughout the country. One of the more recent cases was filed in federal court in Charleston, West Virginia with a victim who experienced a gastrointestinal bleed connected to this medication. The medication was used as part of her treatment for atrial fibrillation. The victim claims the pharmaceutical mega giant ignored studies that show Xarelto increases the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and that at times these bleeds can be severe enough to require transfusions. According to State Journal, a local newspaper, the victim's complaint states the Institute for Safe Medication Practices noted FDA reviewers questioned the safety of the dosing.
A recent report by Lawyers and Settlements notes that these lawsuits are being consolidated for multidistrict litigation. The piece also notes that there are similarities between this lawsuit and a previous lawsuit involving Pradaxa, a drug in the same class as Xarelto. Almost 4,000 Pradaxa lawsuits were settled in early 2014 for approximately $650 million.
Remedies available for victims
Remedies are likely available to those who are victimized by these drugs. Victims can experience financial hardship due to medical bills for emergency room visits, ongoing medical care and missed work. Financial remedies can help cover these costs.
Those who are injured by Xarelto are wise to seek the counsel of an experienced Xarelto litigation attorney. This legal professional can review your case and help better ensure a more favorable outcome.
