Widow seeks $10M in USX lawsuit

YOUNGSTOWN – An 81-year-old widow of a retired U.S. Steel electrician has filed a lawsuit that seeks $10 million in punitive damages from USX Corp.

The suit, filed Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court by the Cleveland law fir of Kelley & Ferraro, alleges the company has not paid $55,000 in workers’ compensation back payments awarded to Mary Kerchofer by a jury in July. She also was awarded $13,500 a year in benefits until she dies.

Court testimony showed that Kerchofer died from prolonged exposure to asbestos in the former U.S. Steel McDonald Works.
