Is Lowered Blood Sugar From Invokana Worth The Side Effects?

When American’s receive a prescription, our primary concern is typically the out-of-pocket cost. We tend to trust that the drugs prescribed are safe and effective. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. In 2013, the drug Invokana (Canagliflozin) came to market. The drug, along with diet and exercise, is prescribed to patients with heightened blood sugar. Most of the drug’s work is done in the kidneys, where it removes sugar.

In 2016, the FDA issued warnings about Invokana. They referenced a medical trial called CANVAS (CANagliflozin cardioVascular Assessment Study) that found that people with Invokana in their medical history have a higher incidence of kidney damage, amputation, and flesh-eating infections.

If you are suffering complications from the use of Invokana, you have an ally in the law firm of Kelley Ferraro, LLC. We are seasoned trial attorneys who have dedicated our lives to helping people who have been harmed by dangerous drugs. Our job is to help tell your story and get you the compensation you deserve.

Have You Experienced Any Of These Symptoms As A Result Of Invokana?

Informed by the CANVAS report, the FDA has ordered that the product’s label be changed to include the following three side effects:

  • Kidney damage: Invokana may lead to an increase in urinary tract infections (UTIs) or diabetic ketoacidosis (damage from an increased production of ketones). For some patients, the drug may lead to kidney failure.
  • Flesh-eating infections: The FDA is now aware of a correlation between Invokana and a horrific flesh-eating infection called Fournier’s gangrene. This infection most commonly affects the genitals and can result in varying degrees of amputation.
  • Amputation: In the clinical trial, CANVAS, results showed that leg and foot amputations occurred at twice the rate with patients who have taken Invokana.

The medical community, in many ways, trusts the pharmaceutical industry in the same way the public does. When a new drug is approved by the FDA, pharmaceutical representatives convince members of the medical community to prescribe it to patients. Even if a physician makes the connection between your symptoms and your use of Invokana, they are not able to prescribe legal advice.
