Man to face charges for fatal wrong-way accident

On Behalf of | Apr 9, 2014 | Car Accidents

A 40-year-old man who was believed to be responsible for causing a fatal crash that occurred on an Ohio highway was taken into police custody on April 5. According to the report, the crash took place on Interstate 480 at approximately 11:30 p.m.

The police stated that, after a preliminary investigation, it appeared the man entered the exit ramp and was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-480. The man collided head-on with a vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center for injuries that were described as serious. A passenger who was in the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver who was accused of causing the accident was also transported to MetroHealth Medical Center. He was later taken into police custody and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault. Police also stated that he may be charged with DUI.

Car accidents can have a wide range of causes, from drunk driving to drivers who are distracted by cellphones. However, because all drivers who use Ohio’s roadways carry the responsibility to drive safely, those who lose a loved one due to the actions of a negligent driver may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim against that driver.

Even if the driver is facing criminal charges, the family members of the deceased loved one may still be eligible to file the claim, regardless of the outcome of the criminal charges. If successful, the family might receive compensation to help them cover financial expenses brought on by the accident, which might include funeral costs and future wages the deceased would have earned.
