IKEA could face product liability claims over mattress

On Behalf of | May 12, 2015 | Products Liability

Ohio parents place an enormous amount of trust in the companies and manufacturers that produce products for their children. From toys to baby formula, most parents simply want what is best and safest for their child. After purchasing what may have initially appeared to be the most appropriate item, it can be devastating to learn that it has been recalled due to serious potential hazards. If injuries do occur because of the defect, it could result in product liability claims against the company.

The popular home furnishing store IKEA issued a recall of nearly 170,000 mattresses intended for use in infant cribs back in Jan. 2015. The recall was prompted by more than one report of infants becoming wedged between the mattress and a crib, trapping them. The concern was that a child could suffocate after accidentally slipping between the edge of the mattress and the crib.

However, all of the defective crib mattresses were not addressed during the initial recall. IKEA recently issued yet another recall concerning over 130,000 mattresses in the United States. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an announcement alongside IKEA’s recall, alerting parents that a mattress is likely defective if two fingers can fit between the crib and the mattress on any side.

Affected mattresses were sold at IKEA stores in Ohio and across the United States From Oct. 2000 through May 2014, leaving a large gap of time for small infants to potentially be seriously harmed. Parents of children who have been injured by a defective product have the option of filing a product liability claim against the manufacturer of the product. When serious injury or extensive medical bills are involved, this can often be one of the most appropriate courses of action for parents to take.
