Man v. Nature: The Ultimate Struggle

Generations of mankind have dreamed of creating a weather machine that can tame the whims of Mother Nature, but the weather is still out of our control as the winter of 2016-2017 sets in.

While drivers cannot control the weather, they are still expected to control their vehicles. With winter storm season approaching, people in Ohio may be wondering what to do when the roads become slick and treacherous. To reduce the possibility of becoming involved in motor vehicle accidents, it helps to drive defensively.

That sounds well and good, but what does defensive driving actually consist of during poor weather conditions such as snow, ice, and wind?

Good question. Read on for helpful winter defensive driving tips.

Step 1: Slow Down!

The first rule for driving in bad weather is to slow down. A driver who leaves about 10 seconds between cars has more room to stop. Stopping a vehicle in slick conditions is best accomplished by keeping steady pressure on the brake. Cars with anti-lock brakes stop better on ice if the driver presses and holds the brake, while drivers without anti-lock brakes should gently pump the brake pedal until the car stops.

Not sure if you have anti-lock brakes? Check your owner’s manual or, if necessary, ask your mechanic.

If Your Car Begins To Skid…

No matter how much room you leave between vehicles and how strictly you watch your speed, loss of traction can still happen due to black ice and other factors. The key is knowing how to respond.

The general rule is for the driver to release the accelerator and steer gently in the direction he or she wants the car to go. The driver may have to adjust from one direction to the other until the car straightens out. He or she should be careful not to panic and overcompensate by turning the wheel too hard or suddenly.

Winter Is Routine, But Accidents Don’t Have To Be

Ohio drivers are not strangers to inclement weather conditions. Vehicle accidents during the winter seem almost routine. However, nothing is routine about suffering injuries in an accident caused when another driver failed to take the necessary precautions when the weather turned bad. Those involved in winter weather accidents would benefit from the advice of an attorney who will examine the circumstances and make recommendations for pursuing possible compensation.
