Can you use medical marijuana for your mesothelioma symptoms?

On Behalf of | Jun 5, 2018 | Mesothelioma

A diagnosis of mesothelioma is possibly the worst news a person can get. Even if the disease is caught in the early stages, the prognosis is not good. There is no known cure despite medical advances over the years.

The disease has a long latency period, which means that it stays dormant in a victim’s body — anywhere from 20 to 50 years. When symptoms finally do appear, a victim’s life expectancy is measured in months, not years. Only five to 10 percent of mesothelioma victims have a five-year survival rate.

Alternative sources of comfort

After a diagnosis, the focus for victims and their families is to make the time left as comfortable and fulfilling as possible. Medical marijuana has become a preferred method for relieving symptoms of the disease and side effects of the treatments. It is notable that most oncologists now discuss the benefits of medical marijuana with their mesothelioma patients.

Ohio legalized medical marijuana in 2016. Since that time, state officials have established the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program. No later than September 2018, cancer patients and others with qualifying medical conditions may obtain and use marijuana in the following forms:

  • Edibles
  • Oils
  • Patches
  • Plant materials
  • Tinctures
  • Vaporization (vaping)

Patients looking for relief will need to register with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy and obtain medical marijuana patient identification cards through the state program this fall. Registration is good for six months for those who are terminally ill. Medical marijuana will be available in 56 locations throughout the state.

Mesothelioma patients and their families often struggle with affording the treatment they need for this terrible disease. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, and asbestos manufacturers and distributors may owe you compensation above and beyond the workers’ compensation benefits you receive.
