Product liability news: Raw turkey products making people sick

On Behalf of | Feb 22, 2019 | Products Liability

In Ohio and across the country, many people use turkey as a healthier protein in their meals. The problem is that right now, it may not be as healthy as many people believe. In fact, raw turkey processing companies could face product liability claims in the aftermath of an outbreak of salmonella connected with some of these products.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak has so far affected people in 24 states and the nation’s capital. On Dec. 21, 2018, the number was around 63 people, but as of Feb. 13, 2019, that number has grown to approximately 279 people. Of that number, one person on the west coast died and 107 ended up requiring hospitalization.

The products involved include raw turkey products for both humans and animals, along with live turkeys. The associated recalls affect hundreds of thousands of pounds of products. Consumers are urged not to consume or serve these products for fear of contracting a salmonella infection, which appears to be resistant to many of the medications often prescribed for the condition. Reportedly, some cases may resolve within seven days with quick and proper treatment, but the infection can become life-threatening.

Anyone here in Ohio who experiences diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever after consuming raw turkey products should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Thereafter, if the illness is linked to tainted products, it may be possible to pursue restitution through a product liability claim. Any funds received could help with medical and other expenses associated with salmonella poisoning.
