School children face asbestos exposure

One of the most terrifying things for Ohio parents may be to learn that their children are in danger at school. However, the danger is not always from a source one would expect. Parents of students attending one elementary school in another state were shocked to learn that their children may have been victims of asbestos exposure after recent construction breached asbestos plaster in the building.

About 400 students were immediately transferred to an alternate educational site for what officials said would be a few weeks. However, a month later, parents' concern grew when a reassessment of the situation convinced school officials to bar students from the school building indefinitely. Despite that initial readings for asbestos revealed no exposure, the school district is conducting more tests to be sure there is no danger when the children return, perhaps at the beginning of the next school year.

Almost no research has been done on the effects of asbestos exposure in children. Researchers know that those adults exposed to asbestos may not show symptoms of mesothelioma or other related diseases for decades. However, those asbestos-related illnesses are deadly and, despite having no cure, can lead to costly long-term care.

Students, teachers and other employees of old schools and other public buildings may unknowingly face asbestos exposure day after day. When the symptoms of asbestos- related illnesses begin to appear, it may be upsetting and confusing. Reaching out to a skilled Ohio attorney for guidance and answers may provide options for improving one's quality of life.
